Glossary of Terms

G: Games played – the number of games in which the player appeared.

PA: Plate appearances – total trips to the plate, including at-bats plus walks, hit-by-pitches, and sacrifices.

AB: At-bats – official batting attempts, excluding walks, hit-by-pitches, and sacrifice situations.

R: Runs scored – the number of times the player crossed home plate to score a run.

H: Hits – total hits safely made by the player (including singles, doubles, triples, and home runs).

2B: Doubles – hits on which the batter reaches second base safely.

3B: Triples – hits on which the batter reaches third base safely.

HR: Home runs – hits where the batter circles all bases and scores, typically by hitting the ball out of the park in fair territory.

RBI: Runs batted in – the number of runs a player drives in via their plate appearances (credit given for runs scoring on a hit, walk, etc., including the batter’s own run on a home run).

BB: Walks (Base on Balls) – times the player was awarded first base after four balls, indicating the pitcher threw four pitches outside the strike zone.

HBP: Hit by pitch – times the player reached base after being hit by a pitched ball.

SO: Strikeouts – the number of times the player struck out (made three strikes without putting the ball in play).

SB: Stolen bases – number of bases the player stole successfully during baserunning.

CS: Caught stealing – times the player was thrown out while attempting to steal a base.

SB%: Stolen base percentage – the success rate of stealing bases, calculated as stolen bases divided by total steal attempts (SB / (SB + CS)).

SH: Sacrifice hits (bunts) – number of successful sacrifice bunts where the batter makes an out to advance a runner.

SF: Sacrifice flies – fly-ball outs that allow a runner to score from third base.

GIDP: Grounded into double plays – times the batter hit a ground ball that resulted in two outs on the same play.

AVG: Batting average – hits divided by at-bats, reflecting how often the player gets a hit per official at-bat.

OBP: On-base percentage – the fraction of plate appearances in which the player reaches base safely (via hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch).

SLG: Slugging percentage – total bases achieved on hits divided by at-bats, measuring the average number of bases earned per at-bat (an indicator of power).

OPS: On-base plus slugging – the sum of on-base percentage and slugging percentage, giving a combined measure of a player’s ability to reach base and hit for power.

OPS+: Adjusted OPS – a league- and park-normalized version of OPS where 100 is league average; values above 100 indicate above-average performance.

wOBA: Weighted On-Base Average – an advanced metric that assigns weights to each offensive event (singles, doubles, walks, etc.) and averages them per plate appearance, reflecting overall offensive value on a scale similar to OBP.

wRAA: Weighted Runs Above Average – the number of runs a player produces above or below the league average hitter, based on wOBA (zero represents league-average offensive contribution).

BABIP: Batting Average on Balls in Play – the batting average on batted balls that are in play (excluding home runs and strikeouts), indicating how often balls put in play go for hits.

ISO: Isolated Power – a measure of a player’s raw power, calculated as slugging percentage minus batting average. It represents average extra bases per at-bat (higher ISO means more extra-base hits).

TA: Total Average – an offensive statistic that measures total bases gained per out. It accounts for all bases gained from hits, walks, and stolen bases, divided by the number of outs the player made (higher values indicate greater overall offensive contribution).

SA: Secondary Average – a metric of offensive production beyond batting average, focusing on extra-base hits, walks, and stolen bases. It is calculated as (extra bases on hits + walks + stolen bases – caught stealing) per at-bat, highlighting a player’s ability to contribute through power and speed in addition to just hitting for average.

RC: Runs Created – a sabermetric statistic estimating the total runs a player contributes to the offense. It uses a formula incorporating hits, walks, and other offensive events to gauge how many runs the player “created” for their team.

RCPA: Runs Created per Plate Appearance – the average number of runs created by the player per plate appearance. This rate stat shows how efficiently a player creates runs each time up.

wRC: Weighted Runs Created – the total runs created by a player, calculated using weighted values for offensive events (like wOBA) without adjusting for park or league. It expresses a player’s offensive output in terms of runs.

wRCPA: Weighted Runs Created per Plate Appearance – the rate of weighted runs created per plate appearance, indicating how many runs (on average) a player produces each trip to the plate when using the weighted runs created metric.

wRC+: Weighted Runs Created Plus – an index of a player’s offensive runs created relative to league average, adjusted for ballpark factors. A wRC+ of 100 is league average, and every point above or below 100 represents a percentage point better or worse than average (e.g., 120 means 20% above league average).

XBH%: Extra-base hit percentage – the percentage of a player’s opportunities that result in an extra-base hit. This typically represents the share of plate appearances (or at-bats) that end in a double, triple, or home run, indicating the frequency of power hits.

XBHH%: Extra-base hits per hit percentage – the percentage of a player’s hits that are extra-base hits. It shows how many of a batter’s total hits go for extra bases (doubles, triples, or homers), reflecting the proportion of hits that have more than one base.

HR%: Home run percentage – the percentage of a player’s plate appearances that result in a home run.

BB%: Walk percentage – the percentage of a player’s plate appearances that result in a base on balls (walk).

SO%: Strikeout percentage – the percentage of a player’s plate appearances that result in a strikeout.

BIP%: Balls in play percentage – the percentage of plate appearances in which the player puts the ball in play (i.e. the ball is hit into fair territory, excluding outcomes like walks, strikeouts, or home runs where the ball isn’t fielded).

Ct%: Contact rate – the percentage of the player’s swings that make contact with the ball (either putting it in play or fouling it off), indicating how frequently the batter makes any contact when swinging.

RSP: Runs scored percentage – the percentage of times the player scores a run after reaching base. It reflects how often a player eventually comes around to score once they’ve gotten on base.

PSN: Power-Speed Number – a composite metric that combines home run and stolen base totals into one number, reflecting a player’s blend of power and speed. A higher PSN indicates a rare combination of both frequent homers and steals.
